Childline is an NGO supported by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS). It stands for a supportive and sympathetic friend, who is always there for vulnerable children 24hours of the day, 365 days of the year. 27million calls as of March 2013, 3 million children, 291 cities, 17 years. 1098, a magical number that spells hope for millions of children across India. Childline is India’s first 24hour, free emergency phone service for children in need of aid and assistance.
Despite the low reporting levels, 53.2 percent, or one out of two, children in India reported having faced one or more forms of sexual abuse. This statistic is even worse for state-run or -funded homes, activists say. The vulnerability of children to sexual abuse is very high, and it becomes worse because there is nobody monitoring these children’s homes.
To make a difference and improve the conditions, Childline has come up with several videos and effective measures to teach children if they face such conditions and how to cope up with them.
One video in particular- Komal: A film on CSA – is a 10 minute short animated movie detailing the experiences of Komal, a child growing up in middle-class India, who becomes a victim of sexual abuse, and how she deals with it. It is an extremely impressive effort that is ideal for those parents who want to broach the topic of sexual abuse with their kids, but are at a loss when it comes to finding the means to do so. The video focuses on the sad reality that is faced by small innocent children at the hands of cruel and brutal men. Childline has done a great job in producing such an emotional video and showcasing Komal’s story through cartoons and simple language, which is easy to understand and ends with a message.
Childline is trying to help the children from across the country; you can be a part too by registering online. Volunteer, donate, help, be a friend. There are children who really need a friend like you.
